Answer to What is This on the Cover of American Laboratory June/July

The image on the cover of American Laboratory June/July is a yeast cell. It was captured with a JEOL FEG SEM (field emission gun scanning electron microscope) equipped with a Gatan Auto cryo transfer system. Original magnification 50,000×. Image courtesy of JEOL USA, Inc. (Peabody, MA, U.S.A.).

Field emission gun scanning electron microscopy takes advantage of the high resolution of SEM and the electron sources of FEG. The technique is used to obtain high-resolution images of materials, cells, and tissues at the micron, submicron, and nanometer scale.
