Answer to What is This on the Cover of American Laboratory March

The image on the cover of the American Laboratory March 2013 issue shows Morpho butterfly wing. The wing was segmented and placed in liquid nitrogen. Portions were removed and coated with gold to make the wing conductive. The image was captured using an FEI (Hillsboro, OR, U.S.A.) scanning electron microscope (Quanta™ 200 FEG), viewed under high vacuum. Original magnification 500×. The image was captured by Gerald Poirier of Princeton University and color enhanced by high school intern Monica Ting.
