Answer to What is This on the Cover of American Laboratory February

The image on the cover of American Laboratory February showed a fingerprint. A fingerprint on a polymer slide was cut with femtosecond-pulsed laser ablation. The nonconductive specimen was sputtered with an approximately 5-nm-thick AuPd-layer. The image was captured by Andreas Steiger-Thirsfeld and colored by Karin Whitmore (Technical University Vienna, University Service-Center of Transmission Electron Microscopy) using SEM imaging with SE, 10 kV accelerating voltage, in high vacuum, original magnification 100×.
