Answer to What is This on the Cover of American Laboratory May

The image on the cover of American Laboratory May showed a Sarcoptes scabiei, the cause of a skin infection in humans known as scabies. The sample was provided by a local dermatology clinic to Dr. Fred E. Hossler, Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN. The sample was fixed in a buffered glutaraldehyde-formaldehyde mixture, fixed in osmium tetroxide, critical point dried, mounted on an SEM stub, and gold coated. The image was taken with a Zeiss DSM 940 scanning electron microscope, using routine SEM, and was artificially colored using Photoshop. Original magnification was 200x.
