Simon Coles, Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton and Director of the UK National Crystallography Service (NCS) discusses key instrumentation used for crystallographic analysis and its importance and value in this arena. Utilizing the Rigaku FR-E+ system, the NCS performs 24/7 crystallographic analysis in confidence for more than 1600 samples a year from institutions. Additionally, Simon also discusses crystallography in an academic setting. Utilizing the Rigaku XtaLAB mini benchtop X-ray crystallography system and the Rigaku MiniFlex benchtop X-ray diffractometer, teaching crystallography can now be taken outside of the lecture room and into the laboratory. Enriching the learning experience, students not only learn how these instruments perform crystallography analysis, but also can access the instruments to run their own crystallographic experiments, whether at the undergraduate or research level.
