14 February, 2013: Bruker Chemical and Applied Markets (CAM), Fremont, California, US:  Ahead of the forthcoming Mass Spectrometry 2013 conference (6-7 March 2013) in Singapore, world thought leader Professor O. David Sparkman presents a two day workshop on mass spectral interpretation. Bruker Chemical and Applied Markets division (Bruker CAM) is sponsoring the workshop, which is designed to develop the mass spectral skills of analytical scientists with all levels of experience. Interest in this workshop is expected to be high, with places still currently available http://bit.ly/BCA176

As Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, and Consultant to the National Institute of Standards and Technology Mass Spectrometry Data Centre, Prof. Sparkman is truly at the pinnacle in the field of mass spectrometry. He brings  fifty years¹ experience as an analytical scientist to the two day workshop. Prof. Sparkman will cover the fundamental skills necessary to understand the fragmentation of ions formed by electron ionization (EI) in GC-MS or by one of the soft ionization techniques employed in LC-MS. The training course will teach skills vital for determining the Œquality¹ of a mass spectrum, so that interpretations can be conducted selectively to increase laboratory productivity.

Further topics to be covered in the workshop include: the determination of elemental composition from accurate mass measurements and the relative intensity of isotope peaks; the use of Library Search Programs and databases of mass spectra with EI data and data that is obtained using collisionally activated dissociation. There will also be a discussion of the different types of m/z analyzers and the different types of ions encountered in modern mass spectrometry.

³There could be no better way to learn the fundamental skills of mass spectral interpretation than with the master and one of the most experienced instructors in the field. Bruker is keen to support fundamental skills training and the Mass Spectral Interpretation Workshop was the perfect opportunity to do this with David at the helm² said Rohan Thakur, Vice President of Bruker CAM. ²The Mass Spectrometry Conference offers the opportunity for everyone, with varying backgrounds and levels of experience, to improve their mass spectrometry skills and become more proficient in analytical interpretation - bringing higher levels of productivity to their laboratories and applications in which they operate.²
