Functional Imaging and Brain Mapping Are Topics of Olympus Symposium at Society for Neuroscience Meeting, October 15, 6:30 p.m.
CENTER VALLEY, Pa., October 9, 2012 - Olympus is hosting its third major neuroimaging symposium in conjunction with the 2012 meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) in New Orleans on Monday, October 15. The Olympus Neuroimaging Symposium will be held near the Convention Center at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Exhibition Center, 2 Poydras Street, Rooms A & B, beginning at 6:30pm. The symposium is open to all media and SfN registered attendees; a reception will follow.
The symposium will focus on important new developments in both functional imaging and brain mapping on a microscopic level. Connectomics imaging helps us map the brain and other organs in detail, usually using fixed tissue. Other current research methods focus on how living neurobiological tissues actually function. Leading researchers will address ways that pairing these two kinds of studies may help shed light on life processes, discussing both fixed and live applications. Speakers include:
- Harvey Karten, M.D., University of California, San Diego
- Claudio Vinegoni, Ph.D., Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital
Dr. Karten will discuss whole slide imaging and its impact on connectomics and cytoarchitecture, including a new high-contrast darkfield capability that may help reveal fine neuronal processes. Dr. Vinegoni will discuss important, recently published methods for eliminating movement during live animal imaging.
