Fairfax, VA – The Laboratory Products Association has announced the topic and speaker for its Product Managers Breakfast during Pittcon on Tuesday, March 15th from 7:30-‐8:30am at the Georgia World Congress Center. Ashish Sood, who is a Professor of Marketing at the prestigious Goizueta Business School, Emory University will discuss the following topics related to Innovation and New Product Development:

  • How technologies change and compete over time:
A central practical problem that faces managers is when to shift investments from the old to the new technology. New product development and major investments in research depend upon a proper understanding of technological evolution in general. It is also important to know the dimensions of competition between technologies, the process of transition between old and new, and the source of innovations.
  • Impact of new technologies on existing technologies, firms and markets:
The failure of firms in the face of technological change has been a topic of intense research and debate, spawning the theory (among others) of disruptive technologies. What are the dynamics of competition between the new technology and existing technologies? How does disruption occur and what are the early signs of a disruption by a new technology? Who introduces a disruptive technology and who survives disruption? What are the causes of disruption? When does disruption occur and how can we predict it?
  • Market returns to new product development:
Some critics assert that an earnings-focused short-term orientation on boosting stock price may undercut investments in innovation that typically have a long payoff. Such critics assume that the market does not reward efforts in innovation that typically take time to payoff. However, accurately assessing the market returns to innovation may be critical to understanding how markets respond to innovation and motivating firms to invest in innovation.

Sood will also present some nuances regarding the innovation practices specific to the life sciences industry as well.
